Marceau portrays Lisa who moves to California to find a new beginning after her children grow up and leave at home and following the demise of her mother whom was famous throughout France. With the assistance of her best friend from LA, Luka, Lisa begins dating Luka and encounters some really awkward interactions.
“It’s as if it’s a representation of what’s happening in the world today … the picture is as if ‘Ok let’s get out of the moment and look at 2022. What’s the current color in the life of this woman? In the world as a whole”,” Marceau, 55 said to Reuters in an interview.
“It’s more like a small tableau of modern-day art for a woman of 50.”
Sophie Marceau – who rose to fame in her home country of France with her film debut “La Boum” (The party) before becoming a household name through films such as “Braveheart” along with The James Bond movie ‘The World is Too Small’– reunites with Azuelos in the film. Azuelos had previously directed Marceau in “LOL” and “A Chance Encounter,”.
The film is filled with poignant flashbacks to Lisa as a young girl being left by her mom. Azuelos has a mother of her own, French singer Marie Laforet died in the year 2019.
“For me, it was a great feeling because, up until the moment I began filming this story and putting it on the screen I was the only person who was able to truly take it on, to be part of it and see it through,” Azuelos said.
“And the filming began and suddenly there were technicians in the studio, re-creating the 1970s…therefore I was no longer alone … It’s strength in numbers, and this is what I love about cinema. I don’t make films to convey my story in an unselfish way, but it’s due to the collective strength which is what holds all of humanity together.”
“I Love America”, released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, also features Djanis Bouzyani in the role of Luka along with Colin Woodell as Lisa’s new young love interest John.
“What I truly loved about the friendship with Lisa as well as John was the idea that they shouldn’t be in a relationship based on societal expectations and that the two of them are connected on a deeper level by loss, or through common passions,” Woodell, 30 told me.
“It’s easy as it gets. You can make an even deeper connection, that doesn’t care what your age gap may be.”
